Tata Selo, Symbolizes a Father of many Filipinos

    Tata Selo’s story brought different feelings and stands to its readers. From the start and until the end, Tata Selo shows different emotion, behavior and also the quality of being a father to his children or of the family. I feel sad for Tata Selo for everything he has been through in his life. It wasn’t easy to live most especially if you’re not privileged enough to enjoy life. In Tata Selo’s experience, he’s already been considered as a brave father who wants to fight for his life, his responsibilities and for his family. With his way of living and state of life, it requires so much perseverance to continue living as he was facing so many challenges that tested his capability as a husband and father as well. I’m not totally angry for what he did and I can’t blame him as he experienced mistreatment from Kabesang Tano but I’m not invalidating his action since both of them was wrong and should not be a response for everything and it is a sin. Every action should be taken carefully and in control in order to think properly and assess the result of the actions you’re about to create. In Tata Selo’s case, there’s so many wrong treatments he had experienced under his boss that brought him to feel anger and drove him to hurt Kabesang Tano. Kabesang Tano is also accountable for Tata Selo’s action since he mistreated and hurt him which is why it burst his anger and lead into something unexpected. 

The fiction story shows how a loving Father can do everything for his Family and willing to give up everything just for the sake of his Wife and children. The story also presents that anger has something to do with the behavior of a one person even if the person was known as innocent and cannot think that he can do such things. In addition, powerful one abuse or mistreat those people who are powerless and they manipulate and control those people with their hands using their power or connections in the society. In a real life setting, these things do really happen and it has been the characteristics of many filipino fathers not just for the poor people like Tata Selo’s state of life after all of the problem they face but also for filipino father who has everything; they want to protect, provide and dedicate their own life for his family. Looking at a wide perspective, these characteristics of a Filipino Father has a positive and negative effect on society and their own behavior. Everything will be fine if the way they handle things are in control and if they do their duties or responsibilities without hurting anyone. 

As a young person, I have the voice to speak up and fight for what is right and I shouldn’t let any powerful people use their power to invalidate their actions even if they violate human rights considering that Tata Selo has been a loyal farmer/employee to him and just want to make a living for his own family. If I will also be given a chance to give testimony for everything I know on Tata Selo’s case, I’ll definitely help them by justifying Tata Selo’s action and narrating how Kabesang Tano treat him in order to let justice prevail on what was the real situation of how these things occur and what reason drove Tata Selo to commit those actions. With the kind of culture and beliefs that most people has on the story, it will be hard for a young person to change the situation since the opponents are way older and powerful compared to the youth but if every young person’s has the same mindset as mine, it will be possible to get the goal most especially if every young person really want to cooperate and do something about this if this really happened in real life.

As I read the story of Tata Selo, I see that being a father isn’t easy and you have to do something or even devote everything just for your family. I can also transcend in Tata Selo’s behavior that he’s not just a father but he is a father who really loves, cares and is responsible to his children and wife which some Fathers do not or forgot to possess. It can be hard for a father to shoulder everything but it will be possible if he is determined to create solutions for every challenge that may happen in his life that sometimes lead into a sin even. I also think that the power of a person has a really big impact to change the state of life of a person or of a family regardless of how good or bad they show. Also, being powerful allows a person to abuse and mistreat his fellow people even if they did nothing wrong to you and just for their own pleasure. This kind of story was something of an eye opener for the situation of some farmers or some filipino people that were aggrieved by those people who had a higher state of life on them or more privileged compared to them.
